Anders Nilsson’s Cello Concerto was met with a standing ovation when it premiered at Malmö Live Concert Hall in 2020. Now it is time for the next premiere: the captivating Fifth Symphony, inspired by Thomas Mann’s novel Doctor Faustus, in which a composer sells his soul to the devil.
The four opening notes of Beethoven’s Fifth are among the most famous in music history. They are hardly a melody, more a motto that runs through the entire symphony, often described as “fate knocking at the door.”
